31 JULY 11

Westfield, MA

Amelia Park Ice Arena in Westfield is proud to announce that they will be hosting the inaugural Kevin J. Major Memorial Hockey Tournament from August 19-21, 2011. The event is being held in the memory of Kevin Major who recently died tragically in Congamond Lakes.   The event will benefit the Kevin J. Major Scholarship for Youth Sports.

The tournament will feature 15 teams playing 2 games over the weekend, with the top 4 teams facing off in a playoff and then a champion crowned on Sunday evening. Teams can have 17 people on their roster. Roster can have one player 16+, and the rest of the roster must be 18+.

“When Kevin’s family approached me about this, they said they wanted to do something at a place near and dear to Kevin’s heart,” said Carole Appleton, Executive Director of the Amelia Park Ice Arena. “Kevin not only started youth hockey in our rink, but starred at St. Mary’s, and helped me coordinate our 18+ league that we started this summer. This event will be an honor for us to put together.”

The weekend will not only feature the 15 teams competing, but a game featuring players over age 40 coached by Kevin’s Dad, Pat, and family to kick the event off on Friday night at 9pm. On Saturday at noon, Kevin’s youngest brother, Ryan, will be playing with Westfield Youth Hockey players, as a symbol of what Kevin’s foundation will represent – youth sports.

Amelia Park Ice Arena is an ice arena/sports complex and memorial garden, financed by Westfield, Massachusetts philanthropist Albert F. Ferst, in memory of his wife Amelia. The Albert & Amelia Ferst Operating Foundation, a 501 (c) 3 non-profit entity, was formed in 1998, with the expressed purpose of building a recreational facility and garden in her memory.
